James W. Southard Military - Civil War From Lewis Southard of Nellysford, Virginia Private James W. Southard was the brother of Robert, Isaac and Newton serving in the 34th Virginia Infantry. He enlisted at Taylorsville, Hanover County, May 15, 1863. He was assigned to Co. F, 7th Virginia Infantry. He had been in service only a month and a half when he was reported in July-August as missing in action, at Gettysburg, July 3,1863. The 7th Virginia was one of the regiments taking part in Picketts Charge. Actually he was wounded and captured and sent to Camp Letterman USA General Hospital in Gettysburg. His wound was noted as general fracture of the left radius in two places. (The inside bone in his left arm was broken in two places.) The cause is unknown. He remained in this hospital from July 27, 1863 until Sept 1, 1863 when he was transferred to General Hospital West Buildings, Baltimore, Maryland. He was paroled from General Hospital on Sept. 25, 1863 and transferred to City Point, Virginia where he arrived Sept. 27, 1863 with 538 prisoners on a flag of truce boat, under command of Major John E. Mulford. James was taken to Wayside Hospital in Richmond, Virginia in Sept 28, 1863 and later to Chimborazo on Sept 29, 1863. On Oct. 8, 1863 he was placed on sick furlough and probably went home. He was discharged August 30, 1864 at Chester Station, Virginia by reason of wounds received at the Battle of Gettysburg. James was born in 1843 at Madison Co., Virginia. He was the son of Isaac Southard and Lydia Ann Nicholson. He was inducted into the military on 15 May 1863 at Taylorsville, Hanover Co, Virginia. James served in the military in 1863. 1. James died on 8 December 1884 at Madison Co., Virginia, at age at an unknown age .2
